Activity description

As part of its UNSCAR funded project ´Connecting the dots: Supporting SDG 16, ATT and UN PoA implementation through increased parliamentary engagement and action in international processes', the Parliamentary Forum, in cooperation with the Pan-African Parliament, organized a regional seminar in South-Africa from 2-3 March 2018 with the objective to increase parliamentary understanding, participation and ownership in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) and the UN PoA. During the seminar, parliamentary priorities and actions were identified in discussions between parliamentarians from Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Malawi and Zimbabwe and from other countries in the region, as well as representatives from international organisations and the civil society, and compiled into a Parliamentary Action Plan. The goal of the workshop was also to engage parliamentarians in the run-up and preparation for the UN PoA Third Review Conference (RevCon3) in June 2018. The seminar was realised with the support of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation (UNSCAR), and the support and collaboration of the Pan-African Parliament.

Project description

The project 'Connecting the dots: SDG 16, ATT and UN PoA implementation through increased parliamentary engagement and action in international processes' aims to build on the on-going efforts towards 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goal 16.4, the United nations Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (UN PoA) and the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) universalization and implementation, putting special focus on providing parliamentarians with the adequate tools to support the process at the national and regional level. It seeks to use the momentum that the 2030 Agenda, the UN PoA and the ATT have created, in order to gather parliamentarians from focus countries in an effort to facilitate the exchange of experiences, challenges and best practices that surround the legislative work on the three instruments. The project includes a strengthened effort to engage parliamentarians as part of the run-up and preparation for the UN PoA Third Review Conference (RevCon3) in June 2018. The project is funded by UN Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation (UNSCAR).
