UNLIREC first Firearms and Ammunition Evidence Management Course in Belize

Activity description

In the framework of UNLIREC's Caribbean Operational Ballistics Assistance Package, UNLIREC, with funding from Germany, Canada and the USA, delivered its first institutional Firearms and Ammunition Evidence Management Course (EMC) from 12 - 13 December 2018 in Belize. The scope of the course was to develop an effective strategy to investigate and prosecute firearms-related cases and illicit trafficking in firearms and ammunition through coordination and information sharing among security sector officials and affected stakeholders. The participants were, inter alia, firearms examiners, forensic laboratory personnel, scenes of crimes and intelligence police officers, and public prosecutors and were trained on modules on 'Firearms and Ammunition Identification', 'Legal Considerations in Criminal Investigations', 'Evidence Management at the Crime Scene', 'Evidence Examination and Analysis in the Laboratory', 'intelligence and investigation Tools', as well as practical exercise. Participants also received presentations by INTERPOL on addressing firearms trafficking, firearms tracing and investigative tools as well as Belize`s Director of Public Prosecutions on the national legislative context.

Project description

UNLIREC's Operational Forensic Ballistics Assistance Package aims to support Caribbean governments in their efforts to combat illicit trafficking in firearms and ammunition and the resulting impact on armed violence through: (i) strengthening national capacities on operational forensic ballistics; (ii) the establishment of sound national operational forensic ballistics systems; and (iii) establishing effective information management and sharing of forensic ballistics information within governments, regionally within the Caribbean and internationally via INTERPOL. The project's overall goal is to reduce armed violence and impunity by strengthening the national and regional capabilities of the law enforcement communities.
