UNLIREC provides containerized test firing ranges to the National Forensic Science Service (NFSS) Belize and Guyana Police Force (GPF) Guyana
In the framework of UNLIREC's Operational Forensic Ballistics Assistance Package project, UNLIREC and Energy Containment Concepts of England, with funding from Canada and USA, completed the installation, training and handing over of a containerized test firing range to the National Forensic Science Service (NFSS) of Belize and to the Guyana Police Force (GPF). The events took place on August 6-9 2018 (Belize) and August 13-16 2018 (Guyana). Previous technical assessments carried out by UNLIREC of the NFSS, GPF, and Guyana Forensic Science Laboratory in 2015, noted similar health and safety concerns with the existing test fire facilities in both countries. Energy Containment Concepts was commissioned with the installation of containerized test firing ranges for both countries. The cost of the range for each country was US$ 80.000,00, and was sponsored by Canada (Belize) and the United States of America (Guyana).
UNLIREC's Operational Forensic Ballistics Assistance Package aims to support Caribbean governments in their efforts to combat illicit trafficking in firearms and ammunition and the resulting impact on armed violence through: (i) strengthening national capacities on operational forensic ballistics; (ii) the establishment of sound national operational forensic ballistics systems; and (iii) establishing effective information management and sharing of forensic ballistics information within governments, regionally within the Caribbean and internationally via INTERPOL. The project's overall goal is to reduce armed violence and impunity by strengthening the national and regional capabilities of the law enforcement communities.
