Activity description

As part of the project 'Building Roadmaps for Harmonized PoA and ATT Implementation', Small Arms Survey and GRIP organised this two-day event in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia on 21-22 May 2015. 22 delegates from the partner countries and some regional bodies participated in the meeting and training on international control instruments for small arms and light weapons. The meeting paved way for further consultations on implementing a Roadmap for PoA and ATT adjusted for each country's specific context and capacities.

Project description

The project 'Building Roadmaps for Harmonized PoA and ATT Implementation' is a two-year project implemented by the Small Arms Survey and GRIP, funded by the UN Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation (UNSCAR). The goal of the project is to enable harmonization of national-level implementation of the PoA and the ATT in eight selected African countries. The project covers arms stockpile management, weapons marking, record-keeping and tracing, as well as collecting and disposal of surplus arms. It also seeks to identify measures needed to fully implement commitments made under the ATT to regulate states’ trade in conventional arms – in these countries mostly small arms – and how such measures may add value to ongoing efforts to strengthen national capacities to effectively implement the PoA.
