UNISFA weapons destruction ceremony in Abyei

Activity description

As part of the United Nations' Interim Security Force for Abyei's (UNISFA) mandate to curb armed violence in Abyei and in line with UN Security Council resolution 2205 of February 2015, UNISFA held a ceremony on 19 January 2017 to celebrate the destruction of 13 small arms confiscated by UNISFA troops. The ceremony was attended by Sudan and South Sudan National Monitors, senior UNISFA personnel and members of the general public. The event aimed at raising awareness on arms and weapons diversion and the work of UNISFA for a weapon-free Abyei. As part of its mandate UNISFA, to the date of the ceremony, has destroyed 109 small arms and light weapons as well as over 6,800 rounds of small arms ammunition.
