Descripción de la actividad

The West African Network on Small Arms and Light Weapons – Ghana (WAANSA – Ghana), in partnership with the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and the Ghana National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), organized a two-day workshop in Accra, Ghana, titled “Enhancing the Implementation of the Arms Treaty in Ghana; Roles and Obligations of Stakeholders”. The first session focused on raising public awareness about the role the ATT can play in curbing armed violence in the region and was thus attended by civil society and media representatives. The following session brought together governmental representatives and development partners in Ghana. This second workshop was intended to complement government efforts towards the successful implementation of the ATT by raising awareness and providing officials with the tools to communicate the needs of developing countries at the upcoming Conference of States Parties to the ATT. The workshop resulted in valuable discussions with various stakeholders on relevant issues that would enhance the implementation of the Treaty in Ghana, and both civil society and the governmental representatives indicated their intention to fully support implementation of the Treaty.

Descripción del Proyecto

The #ArmsFreeAfrica campaign, a signature focus for Control Arms in 2016, is intended to help reduce the damaging effects of violence caused by the poor regulation of arms transfers in Africa. Its goals are to raise the profile of the threat posed by armed violence, support further universalization and effective implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) in Africa and raise the profile of African Control Arms coalition members. Building on Nigeria’s position as President of the second Conference of States Parties to the ATT (CSP2016), the #ArmsFreeAfrica campaign seeks to highlight the related problems of armed violence and chronic, cyclical conflict in Africa.
