ECOWAS-BICC Multi-phase PSSM course pilot training in Nigeria
From 8 October 2018 to 12 October 2018 ECOWAS, in collaboration with the Multinational Small Arms and Ammunition Group (MSAG) and BICC, organised in Nigeria a first training on PSSM activities for ECOWAS states. The event, which was meant to provide regional forces with technical knowledge of the weapons and their corresponding storage techniques, saw the participation of Police and Military officers from 12 of the 15 ECOWAS states. Furthermore, the course, with the purpose of identifying possible new instructors among the candidates, exposed the participants to real on-site PSSM activities such as: 1) Risk management; 2) Ammunition marking and storage and 3) Physical security of storage sites.
BICC, with the goal to strengthen the capacities of its regional partners on SALW controls and Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM), launched in 2018 a project to organise regional and national-level training activities in the field. The ultimate goal is to cooperate for the concrete implementation of the ECOWAS Convention and to support the African Union for the fulfillment of its obligations under the Silencing the Guns Plan of Action. The project will be running until December 2020.
