Activity description

This workshop was organized by UNRCPD, in cooperation with the Government of Thailand, and was made possible with financial support from the Government of Germany. It provided the participants with an opportunity to learn more about and discuss the implementation requirements of the United Nations Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (PoA) and the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). With 32 representatives from 22 national agencies and departments involved in small arms and light weapons (SALW) control in Thailand attending, the workshop provided a platform to discuss Thailand’s experience in SALW control as well as current challenges faced in this field. International experts from UNODA’s Conventional Arms Branch and UNRCPD, the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), and the Small Arms Survey facilitated the discussion through presentations, offering specific recommendations and practical examples about how to strengthen and enhance national capacity to control SALW. Among the issues discussed were ATT ratification, International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS), the development of a national action plan to control SALW, reporting requirements, record-keeping, regional cooperation among national agencies of ASEAN countries and ASEANAPOL, as well as future assistance and cooperation with UNRCPD.
