Activity description

On 3-5 October 2021, the Ethiopian Ministry of Peace and the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission in partnership with the Bonn International Center for Conflict Studies  (BICC) and the Verification Centre of the German Armed Forces (ZVBw) conducted a joint mission to support the Ethiopian efforts to curb illicit arms flows in Ethiopia and the region. The mission was conducted as part of the AU-BICC project on Arms Control in Africa, implemented with funding from Germany. The primary objective of the joint mission was to conduct arms identification and record-keeping within selected Ethiopian armoury sites. The information obtained will be included into a report for the Ethiopian Ministry of Peace. The information gathered is meant to enhance understanding of arms flows in Ethiopia and is expected to help Ethiopian authorities to shape domestic policies to counter illicit trafficking flows. This information also laid the foundation for the 2021 planned Arms Identification Training which will be conducted in partnership with the Verification Centre of the German Armed Forces (ZVBw). The objective of the 2021 mission is to provide selected practitioners with arms identification and tracing skillsets. This mission, therefore, provided an opportunity to obtain information that can be used by the ZVBw to customize the planned training and to increase its efficiency. Overall, it also supports of the development of the Ethiopian firearms infrastructure processes being undertaken by the Ethiopian Ministry of Peace.
