Activity description

The Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons' General Assembly was held on 13-14 November 2014 in collaboration with the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Jordan with over 30 parliamentarians in attendance. The participants discussed the issue of explosive weapons in populated areas, the ATT and other international arms control instruments. The General Assembly included a joint session with the participants of the meeting on small arms and light weapons (SALW) control in the MENA region that was organized by the Forum on the day before. The session stressed the role of parliamentary oversight and political will in the control of SALW, as well as the specific regional issues which overlap and interact with the problems created through armed violence and the proliferation of SALW. Experts and civil society representatives from Conflict Armament Research, PAX, International Network on Explosive Weapons (INEW), Permanent Peace Movement and Saferworld delivered presentations during the various sessions. The General Assembly adopted a policy statement on armed violence and health and elected a new board for the Forum.
