Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms & Light Weapons (PF-SALW) Inter-parliamentary Conference to Enhance ATT & UN 2001 PoA Implementation by South-South exchange & Cooperation in peru
The purpose of this activity was to promote the signing, ratification and implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), as well as to follow up the Programme of the United Nations to prevent, combat and eradicate the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons in all its aspects (UNPoA). This seminar was part of a series of efforts to create spaces for dialogue and discuss the needs of the different regions. It provided a space for parliamentarians to debate and join efforts to help advance the agenda of reducing gun violence and the proliferation small arms, as a vital peace and security-related challenge. 24 members of the parliaments of Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Togo and Zimbabwe participated with experts from the Association for Public Policy (APP), the National Commission against Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition and Explosives (CONATIAF), International Committee of the Red Cross, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), Small Arms Survey and the Transitions Foundation. The seminar was organized with complementary assistance from UNLIREC and the Peruvian National Congress.
The project 'Enhance ATT and UNPoA Implementation by South-South Parliamentary Exchange and Cooperation' provides support for the ratification of the ATT by organizing inter-regional exchanges and national capacity building activities for legislators from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. The project was funded by the UN Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation (UNSCAR) a multi-donor funding mechanism designed to fund projects aimed at supporting the implementation of the ATT and the UNPoA.
