Activity description

In the framework of the ‘Oversight and Building Capacities for Small Arms Control and Non-proliferation in the Private Security Sector’ project, UNLIREC, with funding from the German government, organized a series of activities to promote good governance in the private security sector in Mexico from 21-25 May 2018. One of the activities included a two-day technical workshop hosted by UNLIREC where more than 50 officials, including federal and state authorities, were trained on how to incorporate physical security procedures at weapons and ammunition stockpiles in order to mitigate the risk of arms diversion towards the illicit market. The content of the workshop is based on the International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS) and the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATGs). Furthermore, UNLIREC, in cooperation with the Mexican authorities, held a round-table discussion on the use of non-lethal weapons by security companies, focusing on oversight mechanisms and regulatory regimes on and other normative, legal and technical issues.
