UNODA Regional Meeting on the Implementation of the UNPOA for Sub-regions of Africa: Towards the 2012 Review conference

Activity description

Ahead of the 2012 Review Conference of the UN Programme of Action on SALW, the UNODA and the government of Kenya, with the financial support of the European Union, organized a regional meeting for African States on the implementation of the UNPOA. The meeting, held in Nairobi on 14-15 August 2012, was attended by 37 African countries and regional organizations, such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Regional Centre on Small Arms in the Great Lakes Region, the Horn of Africa and Bordering States (RECSA) as well as Small Arms Survey and representatives from civil society. Participants reitereted their commitment to the enforcement of the UNPOA and issued several priorities (e.g. weapons and ammunition stockpile management, border controls, transparency on arms transfers, civil society sensitization, the identification, marking and tracing of weapons) for the enforcement of the UNPOA in each sub-regional organizations represented.
