UNRCPD Workshop in Myanmar on Building Capacity in Small Arms and Light Weapons Control through the UN Programme of Action

Activity description

This workshop was organized by UNRCPD, in cooperation with the Government of Myanmar, with funding provided by the Government of Switzerland. It provided the attending government officials from various security sector agencies with an opportunity to discuss the policy and technical issues of implementing the UN PoA. External experts were provided by the Governments of Germany and Switzerland. The discussions focused on analysing the domestic firearms situation in Myanmar, relevant international and regional instruments for SALW control, and the sharing of best practices in areas such as stockpile management, brokering, destruction, marking, recordkeeping and tracing. International and regional cooperation, border control measures and the various international assistance tools, especially for the PoA, were also discussed. In addition, the workshop provided an opportunity for local officials to engage with the participating national and international experts to share experiences and best practices.
