Activity description

As part of the project to support the Togolese Government’s efforts in marking, rehabilitation of stores and destruction of obsolete weapons and ammunition, the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC), together with the Government of the Republic of Togo, held a one-day workshop to launch the project. The workshop was held on 18 May 2017 in Lomé and brought together over 200 participants, including 12 Ministers of the Government, Members of Parliament, the Diplomatic Corps, civil society organizations and representatives of international organizations and the Permanent Secretary to the National Commission to Fight Against the Proliferation and Illicit Trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons (CNLPAL). The workshop was chaired by the Togolese Minister of Security and Civil Protection, who focused on the role of this project in helping Togo improve its fight against proliferation and illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons (SALW) in the country.

Project description

The two-year project on marking, rehabilitation of stores and destruction of arms, ammunition and related material in Togo aims at promoting the achievement of Objective 16.4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which calls for the reduction of illicit arms flow and strengthening of relevant national institutions. It also supports the ambition of the African Union’s “Silencing the Guns by 2020” strategy on the continent, as foreseen in Agenda 2063. A similar project, only covering arms possessed by civilians, was carried in 2014, while the present project covers the arms possessed also by the national security services.
