The Evaluation Project on Small Arms in the Sahel and Neighboring Countries was jointly developed by UNREC and UNDP Regional Office for Africa. The project is aimed at investigating the situation of SALW in the Sahel in order to promote joint action, increased coordination and a regional approach in addressing the SALW proliferation issue. The project also tries to collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative information on small arms in the specific geographic area, to determine the desirability and the nature of appropriate initiatives to be taken in order to deal with ever more complex challenges associated with the illegal trade, uncontrolled proliferation and misuse of small arms. The project includes three phases. The first phase consists of preliminary research. The second phase consists of consultations with stakeholders involved in the fight against the proliferation of SALW. The third phase is the organization of a regional workshop to validate the report.
