The AU Commission held a Governmental Experts' Meeting to Consider the AU Draft Strategy on the Control of Illicit Proliferation, Circulation and Trafficking of SALW and to Elaborate an African Common Position on an Arms Trade Treaty. The event was jointly organized with the Government of Togo and with the technical support of UNREC. The AU Governmental Experts' Meeting reviewed and adopted two important documents: 1) the AU Strategy on the control of the proliferation, circulation and trafficking of SALW; and, 2) the African Common Position on the ATT. The meeting follows an AU Steering Committee meeting from 30 to 31 May 2011 in Bujumbura, Burundi, which began the first draft of an AU Strategy on SALW, their ammunition, explosives and related materials, and African common position on ATT.
