Independent Experts Meeting on the Establishment of ECOWAS SALW Register and Database
Organized by ECOWAS in Abuja, Nigeria, the meeting discussed the potential framework for establishing, managing and operationalizing a regional register and database on SALW. The register and database will be implemented as part of the overall EU support to ECOWAS peace and security mandate along with several activities which include; stockpile safety and security, establishment of national database and SALW register as well as strengthen exemption process and computerization in member states.
The 'EU-West African Regional Indicative Program', funded by European Development Fund will support project implementation in 16 Countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. The Programme focuses on three areas of cooperation with the first being 'Peace, security and regional stability', which includes support to ECOWAS in its regional peace and security mandate and funding for peace and security initiatives. The Regional Indicative Programme under the 11th European Development Fund amounts to a total of $1.75 billion and will cover the time between 2015 and 2020.
