On 8-9 May 2017, in Ndjamena, Chad, the African Union commission organized a consultative meeting to promote the effective implementation of the ATT in Central Africa and enhance the knowledge of policymakers and practitioners from the region on the Treaty. The scope of the meeting was to identify political and operational challenges to the ratification, accession and implementation of the ATT and the measures required to overcome them. The event also allowed participants to discuss the extent of illicit arms proliferation in the region, as well as the legislative, operational and institutional gaps in existing response measures. Finally, the meeting also addressed the related assistance needs of the region and how these could be met through existing funding mechanism. The meeting was attended by policy makers, senior officials and practitioners of Member States of the Central Africa region, representatives from regional (ECCAS, RECSA and ICGLR) and international (EU, UNREC and UNODC) organizations, and Small Arms Survey.
