On 1-2 December 2021, as part of the joint AU-BICC project and with funding from Germany, the African Union and BICC organized a Consultative Workshop for the Development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on the Management of Recovered Small Arms and Light Weapons in N’Djamena, Chad,  following a request of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF). The SOPs will codify procedures for proper identification of SALW, registration and record keeping, including the conditions and circumstances weapons were recovered. The SOPs will also provide for safeguarding and secure storage, underlining the need not to keep the recovered SALW indefinitely. As such, the SOPs should further provide for the timely handover of recovered SALW to the designated national authorities in the respective countries.
