UNODC Global Firearms Programme Regional Training of Trainers on the investigation and prosecution of illicit firearms trafficking

From 29 March to 2 April 2021, the UNODC Global Firearms Programme, in close collaboration with UNODC Sahel Programme, organised a regional training of trainers aimed at practitioners from the criminal justice chains of ten countries in West and Central Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal). Among them were known experts from different services, including Police, INTERPOL National Central Bureaus, customs, prosecutors, magistrates, judges, National Commissions on Small Arms and Light Weapons, as well as from the G5 Sahel Police Component. In addition, newly recruited UNODC staff from Benin, DRC and Niger also joined the training. During the week-long activity, trainees focused on various themes linked to the fight against illicit firearms trafficking, including legal frameworks, conducting investigations, tracing and international cooperation in criminal matters inter-alia. In addition, they were joined by an adult learning methodologies expert to strengthen their skills in the development and delivery of capacity building activities aimed at adult learners.

Since 2017, UNODC, through its Global Firearms Programme (GFP) has been supporting countries in West Africa strengthen their capacities to prevent, detect, investigate and prosecute firearms trafficking and related offences in the region. This activity was part of these efforts, and it aimed at expanding the pool of experts that might be able to support UNODC in its training activities in the West Africa and Sahel regions in the efforts against firearms trafficking and its linkages to organised crime, terrorism and other forms of crime. The training was made possible thanks to contributions from Germany.
