SALW Control in West Africa under the Organised Crime: West African Response to trafficking (OCWAR–T) project
As part of the "Organised Crime: West African Response to trafficking (OCWAR–T) project", jointly funded by Germany and the European Union, MAG destroyed over 2.3 million rounds of small arms ammunition and provided armoury storekeeper and store manager, weapons marking and weapons destruction training to 124 security forces personnel. In addition, MAG conducted 12 technical assessments of existing armouries and storage facilities, locations for new armouries, and demolition sites, and provided weapons marking, cutting and ammunition destruction equipment and material, as well as containerized armouries to Togo’s Army.
The Organised Crime Western African Response to trafficking (OCWAR-T) project has the aim of combatting trafficking of human beings, drugs, firearms, organised crime and terrorism by strengthening the capacities of national institutions and actors involved in the prevention and investigation of organised crime, including national commissions for SALW involved in arms control. The project, focusing on the West Africa region, started in 2019 and its implementation will conclude at the end of 2022. Within this broader project, MAG is one of the implementing partners, specifically focusing on activities to reduce opportunities for illicit trafficking of weapons through improved management and storage of state-held stockpiles.
