African Union – BICC: National Policy Dialogue Workshop on Arms Control in Ethiopia
On 28-31 March 2021, as part of the AU-BICC project on Arms Control in Africa and with funding from Germany, the African Union Commission in partnership with BICC organized a policy dialogue coordination workshop between relevant decision-makers from the Ethiopian Ministry of Peace, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Office of the Attorney General, the Federal Police Commissions, regional security agencies, and others, to support the Government of Ethiopia in the development of legislation and capacity in the field of arms control. The object of this three-day workshop was to inform relevant entities about the recent developments in the field of arms control in Ethiopia, to present the activities planned as part of the project, and to identify priorities and express needs for the future of the Ethiopian arms control, particularly those necessary for the continued implementation of the new national firearms law and regulation as well as international standards. The purpose of this coordination workshop, therefore, was to ensure that all relevant entities are involved in priority setting and further needs assessment, thereby equipping relevant actors with the necessary skills and tools to become self-sustaining.
The AU-BICC project on Arms Control in Africa is implemented by the African Union Commission in cooperation with BICC and with funding from Germany. The project started in April 2021 and aims at continuing providing support to the African union its Regional Economic Communities, Regional Bodies and Member States to coordinate and implement arms control measures on a strategical, technical and policy level.
