Activity description

The UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC) and the National Commission for the fight against the proliferation and illicit circulation of SALW in Côte d'Ivoire organized a restitution workshop on the study of private security firms in Côte d’Ivoire within the framework of the implementation of its National Action Plan. The purpose of the study was to identify those weapons held by private security companies as well as their storage conditions in order to propose necessary reforms and ensure they are in line with international standards.

Project description

At the request of the National Commission (NatCom) on Small Arms in Cote d’Ivoire, UNREC initiated a project entitled 'Strengthening SALW Control in Côte d'Ivoire'. The project aims to: 1) evaluate and rehabilitate select police security stations; 2) equip select rehabilitated sites for stockpile management; 3) complete an examination of the number of arms held by private security companies in the country; 4) train defense and security forces operating along the border; and, 5) develop a guide on best practice standards in stockpile management for the NatCom.
