Descripción de la actividad

The Regional Centre for International Development Corporation (RCIDC) hosted two workshops in Kampala, Uganda aimed to raise awareness about the Arms Trade Treaty among members of the Parliament and to illustrate the need for collaboration among branches of government towards its universalization. The first workshop, hosted on 18 November 2016, was attended by over 60 members of the Peace and Security Parliamentary Committee who discussed synergies between the ATT and regional arms protocols and their importance in preventing terrorism. A follow up event took place on 27 November and it brought together representatives from the Ministry of Security, Defence and the Ugandan State House to discuss how the ATT can fill legislative and institutional gaps towards improving peace and security in the region.

Descripción del Proyecto

The #ArmsFreeAfrica campaign, a signature focus for Control Arms in 2016, is intended to help reduce the damaging effects of violence caused by the poor regulation of arms transfers in Africa. Its goals are to raise the profile of the threat posed by armed violence, support further universalization and effective implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) in Africa and raise the profile of African Control Arms coalition members. Building on Nigeria’s position as President of the second Conference of States Parties to the ATT (CSP2016), the #ArmsFreeAfrica campaign seeks to highlight the related problems of armed violence and chronic, cyclical conflict in Africa.
