Arias Foundation Holds Regional Conference in Panama on Armed Violence and Vulnerable Populations: Improving Monitoring Procedures and Violence Prevention in Central America
The purpose of this workshop, held in collaboration with the Institutional Division on Public Security Issues (DIASP), was for Central American States to share their national experiences in relation to the prevention of armed violence, arms control and the implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty. The meeting also aimed to provide each State with new tools, shared experiences, best practices, civil society consultation and sub-regional cooperation opportunities to address challenges and shortcomings in the implementation of the ATT. By providing national-level context with their regional neighbours, the workshop helped to enrich international ties between sub regional members and to provide a space in which group members could formulate potential initiatives together.
The purpose of this ongoing project is to hold sub regional workshops, and follow-up activities, in order to provide each participating State with space for information exchange and new tools to improve the implementation of public policy, national laws, treaties and international agreements in relation to the prevention of armed violence, arms control and the Arms Trade Treaty. Likewise, the workshops seek to provide attendees with examples of successful experiences in order to highlight the ways in which they might be able to replicate best practices and incentivize inter-governmental cooperation and civil society consultation. Finally, the meetings also aim to practically and pragmatically discuss how best to diminish the regional arms trade and generate accountability to the aims of the ATT.
