United States and Mexico Strengthen Port Security and Capacity to Intercept Weapons of Mass Destruction
The purpose of this collaboration was to implement the Megaports Initiative. The Megaports Initiative is a U.S. Department of Energy program intended to enhance the ability of ports around the world to detect and interdict illicit shipments of special nuclear and other radioactive materials. This was accomplished thanks to the donation of fixed and portable radiation detectors and isotope identifiers, and by providing specialized training and technical assistance focused on key cargo ports.
The U.S. Department of State’s Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Program seeks to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and destabilizing accumulations and irresponsible transfers of conventional weapons by building effective national strategic trade control systems in countries that possess, produce, or supply strategic items, as well as in countries through which such items are most likely to transit.
