German National ATT Assistance Regional Workshop for South Asia and South East Asia on Maritime Arms Transfers and Challenges of Illicit Trafficking and Diversion
As part of the ‘ATT Implementation Support Measures’ project, this workshop, which took place on 4-5 May 2016 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, provided an opportunity for discussions on challenges of maritime transport and destabilizing commodity flows in the region as well as national challenges in the area of arms smuggling. The participants also discussed effective practices to fight SALW diversion, national legal frameworks and regional cooperation. Representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, customs authorities and national enforcement agencies participated in this seminar.
The ‘ATT Implementation Support Measures’ project is a long-term project financed by the German Federal Foreign Office and implemented by the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) since 2015. The project organizes various regional conferences, bilateral seminars and working meetings to discuss the ATT, to address current topics related to export control and facilitates regional cooperation to tackle transnational challenges, such as illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons (SALW). By exchanging and sharing experiences about current efforts and challenges in the course of the ratification and effective implementation of the ATT, the project seeks to actively contribute to the universalization of the treaty.
