Experts Roundtable Meeting on ATT with a Focus on the Horn of Africa
The outreach workshop was organized by the NGO's Saferworld, Control Arms, PAX and CPS-AVIP for Member States of the Horn of Africa including civil society organizations. The workshop was held in Nairobi, Kenya. The first part of this three-day conference featured an in-depth discussion among 25 members of civil society from across Africa about the best advocacy practices that would ensure the widest universalization of the ATT in the region. The second part of the conference, on 9-10 April, featured roundtable discussions with government officials, including from Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Tanzania, as well as representatives from RECSA. Those present gained a deeper understanding of the ATT through an in-depth analysis of the Treaty’s content, discussions about the applicability of the ATT in the Horn of Africa region, useful steps towards accession and its synchronization with other arms control instruments in the region, such as the Nairobi protocol.
The workshop was part of wider range of ATT activities all the implementing organizations were involved in with a common focus on the Horn of Africa. For PAX, the workshop was part of a broader Horn of Africa programme. For Control Arms the workshop was part of their efforts to advance the ATT at the regional level.
