Workshop on Improving Cross-border Sub-regional Cooperation in SALW Control Under Existing Regional and Sub-regional Instruments
As part of the Regional Support Project to the Counter Terrorism Task Force (CTITF), UNREC, with the support of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), organized an Experts workshop on improving cross-border cooperation in SALW control. The workshop, financed by the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Center (UNCTC), brought together national and international experts on improving cross-border and sub-regional cooperation for control of SALW trafficking in relation to existing regional and sub-regional instruments. Participants exchanged views on the strengths and weaknesses of the legislative and judicial systems in relation to subregional and regional cooperation against the proliferation of SALW. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts to discuss ways to improve cross-border, sub-regional cooperation in arms control under the UNSC Resolution 2178 (2014).
The Counter Terrorism Task Force under the auspices of the United Nations Counter Terrorism Centre aims to support African Countries in building capacity to combat violent extremism through the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2178 (2014). Within this framework, UNREC is tasked to provide assistance to Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, as beneficiary countries, in addition to Burkina Faso and Mauritania, with a view to strengthening their legal and judicial capacities to prevent the acquisition and diversion of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) by domestic and foreign terrorist fighters.
