UNLIREC Destroys Firearms and Small Arms Ammunition in Jamaica
The purpose of UNLIREC's continuous assistance was to support the destruction of approximately 3,336 seized, obsolete and surplus firearms, approximately 8.3 tonnes of small arms and light weapons ammunition and 94 parts and components in Jamaica. The ammunition was destroyed using the Small Arms Ammunition Burning Tank (SAABT) designed by UNLIREC and most firearms were destroyed using hydraulic shears. In order to ensure the sustainability of efforts, 18 Jamaican officials were trained on the safe operation of the SAABT and six Jamaican Defence Force officials were trained in light weapons ammunition destruction operations. All destruction activities were conducted using UNLIREC´s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which are in accordance with the International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS) and the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG).
UNLIREC’s Firearms Destruction and Stockpile Management Caribbean Assistance Package helped Caribbean Member States implement key measures called for in the UN 2001 Programme of Action on SALW for combating illicit firearms trafficking, proliferation and preventing armed violence. The assistance package paid particular attention to the promotion of sound stockpile management practices and the regular destruction of surplus, obsolete, and confiscated weapons, ammunition and explosives. As part of this project, UNLIREC donated firearms and ammunition destruction equipment and stockpile management material and trained law enforcement officials in various weapons and ammunition destruction methods to ensure sustainability.
