UNLIREC Delivers Caribbean Armoury Management Training Courses
The purpose of this assistance initiative was to carry out two national and two sub-regional armoury management training courses in the Caribbean. All four courses were held in Trinidad and Tobago. As a result of the courses, 48 armourers from the Caribbean were trained. These officials were trained to manage, store, secure, inspect, maintain, repair, and destroy small arms and its ammunition in keeping with internationally-accepted stockpile management norms. The courses employed the ‘train-the-trainers’ concept whereby the armourers previously trained were given the opportunity to share their knowledge and expertise with course participants. It is intended that the officials trained will impart their knowledge in their respective countries, ensuring, at a regional level, a pool of professionals responsible for weapons storage, management, and accountability. Thus, contributing to reducing the risk of proliferation and ensuring sustainability. All training activities were conducted using UNLIREC´s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which are in accordance with the International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS) and the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG).
UNLIREC’s Firearms Destruction and Stockpile Management Caribbean Assistance Package helped Caribbean Member States implement key measures called for in the UN 2001 Programme of Action on SALW for combating illicit firearms trafficking, proliferation and preventing armed violence. The assistance package paid particular attention to the promotion of sound stockpile management practices and the regular destruction of surplus, obsolete, and confiscated weapons, ammunition and explosives. As part of this project, UNLIREC donated firearms and ammunition destruction equipment and stockpile management material and trained law enforcement officials in various weapons and ammunition destruction methods to ensure sustainability.
