UNREC and CTITF Training of Trainers Workshop in Cameroon on Illicit Trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons and their Ammunition in Africa
As part of the Regional Support Project to the Counter Terrorism Task Force (CTITF), UNREC, with the support of the Government of Cameroon, organized a 'Training of trainers' workshop in Yaoundé, Cameroon from 23 to 28 January 2017, on the Inter-Institutional Course for the fight against the Illicit Trafficking in Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and their Ammunition in Africa. The workshop, financed by the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Center (UNCTC), brought together national and international experts on improving cross- border and sub-regional cooperation for control of SALW trafficking in relation to existing regional and sub-regional instruments. Participants were trained on a wide- range of subjects including human security and human rights, SALW proliferation, their marking, registration, identification, as well as other practical disarmament measures. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts to discuss ways to improve cross-border, sub-regional cooperation in arms control under existing regional disarmament instruments.
The Counter Terrorism Task Force under the auspices of the United Nations Counter Terrorism Centre aims to support African Countries in building capacity to combat violent extremism through the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2178 (2014). Within this framework, UNREC is tasked to provide assistance to Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, as beneficiary countries, in addition to Burkina Faso and Mauritania, with a view to strengthening their legal and judicial capacities to prevent the acquisition and diversion of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) by domestic and foreign terrorist fighters.
