UNREC and CTITF workshop in Nigeria on preventing the acquisition and diversion of weapons by terrorist groups in Lake Chad Basin countries
As part of the Regional Support Project to the Counter Terrorism Task Force (CTITF), UNREC organized two workshops to support the marking of arms in the Lake Chad Basin countries: a sub-regional workshop on 6 -7 November 2017 in N'Djamena, Chad, and a national workshop from 9 to 10 November 2017 in Abuja, Nigeria. The workshops aimed at supporting the process of marking arms and preventing their diversion to terrorist groups in the country. Governments and civil society experts were trained to use the International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS) and the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG).
The Counter Terrorism Task Force under the auspices of the United Nations Counter Terrorism Centre aims to support African Countries in building capacity to combat violent extremism through the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2178 (2014). Within this framework, UNREC is tasked to provide assistance to Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, as beneficiary countries, with a view to strengthening their legal and judicial capacities to prevent the acquisition and diversion of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) by domestic and foreign terrorist fighters.
