ECOWAS and National Commission on Small Arms Hold Annual meeting in Abuja

Activity description

On 24 January 2018, the Regional Coordination Meeting of the National Commissions of ECOWAS Member States took place in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting represented an occasion to keep ECOWAS states' representatives up-to-date on the activities of the organization to fight the illicit trafficking of SALW, including the creation of a regional database and the establishment of a national register for SALW. In addition, during the meeting Nigeria announced the establishment of a committee to transform the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PRESCOM) into the prescribed National Commission (NATCOM). Funded by the EU, the meeting was also attended by representatives of UNIDIR, UNDP, the Bonn International Conversion Centre, GIZ, ICRC as well as the German Verification Centre.
