RECSA ATT sensitization workshop in Sudan

Activity description

On 23-24 October 2018, the Regional Centre for Small Arms (RECSA), in partnership with the Sudan National Focal Point on Small Arms (NFP-SALW) held an inter-agency Arms Trade Treaty sensitization workshop for senior government officials in the Republic of Sudan in Khartoum, with financial support of the United Nations Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation (UNSCAR). The workshop brought together senior officials drawn from state agencies that deal with arms, legislation and international cooperation including: Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense, Law Reform Commission, Parliamentary Commission on Defense and Security, Parliamentary Commission on Legal Affairs, the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Commission, and the Presidential High Commission on Weapons Collection. During the meeting, the RECSA Executive Secretary presented on the complementarities between the Arms Trade Treaty and other arms control instruments and mechanisms that the Republic of Sudan is party to including the United Nations Programme of Action on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons, the Firearms Protocol, the International Tracing Instrument, the Sustainable Development Goals, the Bamako Declaration, Agenda 2063 on the Africa we Want, the Nairobi Protocol and the Sub-Regional Arms Control Mechanism (SARCOM).The workshop received presentations and hosted technical discussions on the content of the Arms Trade Treaty, the ratification process in the Republic of Sudan – including the specific roles of the agencies present, the benefits and obligations of being a State Party and issues of implementation and enforcement.

Project description

RECSA, with the support of the UN Trust Facility Supporting cooperation in Arms Regulation (UNSCAR) is conducting national-level workshops in selected member states with the aim of raising awareness and building the momentum towards ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty in the RECSA region. The campaign provides a forum for inter-agency dialogues between various state agencies involved in the ratification of international security-related instruments.
