African Union Workshop on Ethiopian Police Doctrine and Firearms Proclamation

Activity description

On 5-8 July and 12-15 July 2021, the African Union Political Affairs, Peace and Security Deparment (AUC PAPS) supported the Ethiopian Ministry of Peace on the roll-out of its Police Doctrine & Firearms Proclamation for federal and regional police officers, which included a workshop on the impact of illicit arms; the threat of IEDs; and the AU Silencing the Guns by 2020-initiative.

The workshop highlighted continental and regional instruments on SALW, the Ethiopian Firearms Proclamation, and the role of arms tracking and marking in the Ethiopian Police Doctrine, and outlined the need for demilitarization, depoliticization, decentralization and democratization of the Police in line with regional and international standards
