Catalysts, Campaigners, and Champions of Change - Convening, Mobilizing and Enabling Women Parliamentarians in Africa in Addressing Needs Identified in Requests for International Assistance in 2018 National Reports on the Implementation of the UN Programme
On April 8th 2021, the Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA), with the financial support of UNSCAR, organized a webinar on international instruments and initiatives on SALW as part of the project "Catalysts, Capaigners and Champions of Change." The webinar focused in particular on the African region and was attended by parliamentarians from Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Togo, Somalia, Mali. During the webinar, representatives of PGA provided an overview of the main instruments and regional initiatives that aim to tackle the illicit proliferation of SALW and discussed the main related challenges that African regions and countries face in this regard. The PGA team also elaborated on the Biennial Reporting requirements under the UNPoA, drawing attention in particular to sample Reports submitted by certain States in 2018 and 2020.
Parliamentarians who had been unable to join the webinar were povided a status report for each of their countries covering their track record of meeting reporting requirements under the UNPoA and areas of international assistance requested by their respective Governments.
The project “Catalysts, Campaigners and Champions of Change - Convening, Mobilizing and Enabling Women Parliamentarians in Africa and South Asia in Addressing Needs Identified in Requests for International Assistance in 2018 National Reports on the Implementation of the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons and the International Tracing Instrument” is implemented by Parliamentarians for Global Action in the period of 2020-21 with the financial support of UNSCAR. PGA implemented the project as part of its Campaign to Address the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and to Promote the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).
