Some of the assistance activities cared out under the project, 'Promoting ATT Ratification in Peru', by the Instituto de Seguridad y Derechos Humanos (ISDH) have been: (i) two urban outreach activities to sensitize youth on armed violence; (ii) one outreach conference in the Peruvian congress with the participation from the authorities of the ministry of foreign relations; (iii) a campaign of lobbying and visits to relevant political authorities to achieve a favorable opinion and for constituents to demand action; (iv) a follow-up campaign to members of congress and other relevant authorities like the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the National Council Against the Illicit Manufacturing and Trafficking of Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives and related Materials (CONATIAF); (v) a second urban outreach activity to sensitize citizens; (vi) follow-up letter to 130 congressmen and congresswomen with informative material and demanding ratification to be included in the legislative agenda. This also included lobbying to the four commissions of congress and work breakfast with members of congress; (vii) two academic conferences to sensitize universities and young university students; and (viii) a campaign on social media to distribute relevant information and work jointly with other organizations to generate sensitization in the general public on human rights and arms transfers.
The objective of this project was to carry out a sensitization campaign to get congress to ratify the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). To achieve this objective a multisectorial information outreach campaign was carried out, starting in 2012. Implementing this campaign the ISDH pursued the sensitization of different constituencies on the importance of the ATT and the impact of armed violence so voters would press their respective congress representatives.
