Lusophone Parliamentary Workshop on Mobilizing Parliamentarians to Advocate for Improved Compliance with the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons
On 24-24 October 2018, Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) organised a two-day workshop, sponsored by UNSCAR and facilitated by the PGA National Group in the National Assembly of Guinea-Bissau, on concrete measures that could be taken to promote compliance with the UN Program of Action on Illicit Trafficking in Small Arms and Light Weapons UNPOA), as well as to engage more effectively in Women in Parliamentary Committees Defense, Security and Interior Affairs in the parliaments of their respective countries.
This Workshop brought together parliamentarians and government Officials from eight Lusophone states around the world, as well as a representative from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), civil society organizations and other experts. A Plan of Action was adopted in Portuguese at the conclusion of the Workshop, establishing a series of practical, specific and easy-to-implement measures for participants to take back to their respective countries.
Funded by UNSCAR, in 2018 PGA implemented the project ‘Mobilizing Parliamentarians to Advocate for Improved Compliance with the UN PoA on SALW and Promoting Greater Membership, and More Effective Participation by, Women MPs in Defence/Security/Interior Committees in Lusophone, African and Pacific Island States’, which goal was the improved implementation of the UN PoA on SALW, including national reporting requirements; and increased membership of, and more effective participation by, Women MPs in Defence/Security/Interior Committees in Lusophone, African and Pacific Island States.
