Activity description

With the aim of speeding up the ATT ratification process in Burundi, Action on Armed Violence in Burundi (AOAV Burundi) and the Training Centre for Development of Ex-Combatants (CEDAC) launched a national advocacy campaign supporting the rapid ratification of the ATT by Burundi. A radio spot distributed to the main media outlets, launched this campaign and informed Burundians about the Treaty and urged them to support universalization efforts. Advocacy letters have also been sent to all key stakeholders, including parliamentarians, governmental officials and the military. A workshop involving the National Disarmament Commission which represents the Burundian government in disarmament affairs as well as some key members of the Parliament, governmental, police and military officials, and members of the civil society was organized by AOAV on November 12-13.

Project description

The activity is part of the general national advocacy campaign to support the rapid ratification of the ATT in Burundi, a one year advocacy campaign set to end in December 2015. CEDAC has been conducting a series of lobbying activities, which made it possible to have the ATT draft legislation, being taken from the Secretary of the Government of Burundi to the Parliament, where it is under analysis today by the MPs’ Commission in charge of Security and Defense, ready for adoption and ratification.
