Small Arms Survey - Strengthening the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Firearms Protocol and its Implementation to Effectively Tackle the Illicit Small Arms Trade
As part of the UNSCAR-funded project 'Strengthening the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Firearms Protocol and its Implementation to Effectively Tackle the Illicit Small Arms Trade', the Small Arms Survey worked as the 'technical team' for the SADC task team that has received the mandate during 2020–21 to develop a regional strategy and action plan to prevent and combat illicit firearms, ammunition, and other related material in the Southern African Development Community region and to update the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the implementation of the SADC Firearms Protocol.
The project 'Strengthening the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Firearms Protocol and its Implementation to Effectively Tackle the Illicit Small Arms Trade' is implemented by the Small Arms Survey with funding from UNSCAR. The aim of the project is to strengthen the SADC Firearms Protocol and to assist SADC and the Southern African Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization to assess national small arms control systems, develop a regional strategy and action plan, and update standard operating procedures for implementing the SADC Firearms Protocol in order to support efforts to control small arms and more effectively reduce illicit arms flows and violent deaths in the SADC region.
