UNIDIR Pacific Regional Training-of-Trainers Workshop on ISACS Assessment Tools
This regional Training-of-Trainers workshop formed part of the UNIDIR-led project ‘Measuring, Prioritizing and Evaluating Efforts to Implement SALW Controls (Phase III): Capacity-Building on Small Arms Management through Regional Workshops on the Use and Integration of the ISACS Software Tool’. It was held in Wellington from 2–5 December 2014 and organised by UNIDIR and the ISACS Inter-Agency Support Unit in cooperation with the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police (PICP), the UNDP Pacific Centre and the UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD). During the workshop 12 policy, technical and law enforcement officers working in the Asia Pacific region were trained on how to use ISACS and its Assessment Tool to guide their operational work on SALW control, specifically in the areas of stockpile management, marking, tracing, record keeping, border controls, and law enforcement cooperation. The workshop also supported the partner states in preparing national reports on the implementation of the UN PoA and the International Tracing Instrument (ITI). Discussions explored preliminary ideas for a comprehensive action plan on small arms control for the Pacific region.
The UNIDIR project ‘Measuring, Prioritizing and Evaluating Efforts to Implement SALW Controls (Phase III): Capacity-Building on Small Arms Management through Regional Workshops on the Use and Integration of the ISACS Software Tool’ aimed to build capacity in UN and other regional organisations in the use and integration of the ISACS self-assessment software tool. Phase III placed particular emphasis on promoting South-South cooperation in building capacity on the use of the ISACS software tool and in training others how to use it. UNIDIR, in cooperation with regional partners, organized a series of 5 regional Training-of-Trainers style capacity building workshops in the second half of 2014 in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and Asia.
