Activity description

The purpose of UNLIREC's continued assistance was to: (i) support the destruction, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Ecuador, of 11,721 small arms ammunition in Quito; (ii) carry out a training seminar, funded by Canada, imparted at the Ministry of Defence, to national authorities on destruction methodology and stockpile management best practices in line with international standards; and (iii) donate, in order to safeguard the sustainability of destruction efforts, an UNLIREC-designed small arms ammunition burning tank (SAABT) funded by Sweden. The national authorities of Ecuador continued the efforts to combat illicit trafficking by constructing additional SAABTs to be distributed across the country. All destruction activities were conducted using UNLIREC´s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which are in accordance with the International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS) and the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG).
