UNLIREC Enhances Implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1540(2004) with funding from the United States of America

Activity description

As part of UNLIREC's ongoing 'Programme to Strengthen the Implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1540 (2004)', the Centre, between 2014 and 2016, has carried out: (i) a national roundtable in Grenada; (ii) technical assistance and meetings with senior government officials in Granada; (iii) a needs identification visit to Belize; (iv) a National Roundtable in Trinidad and Tobago; (v) a National Roundtable and legal drafting assistance in Jamaica; (vi) a National workshop in the Dominican Republic; (vii) technical assistance on proliferation financing in Trinidad and Tobago; (viii) a National Workshop in Belize; (ix) a regional seminar for CARICOM countries held in Peru; (x) a National Action Plan meeting and Inter-Institutional Working Group in Belize; (xi) a tabletop exercise on risk management at port facilities, in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in Trinidad and Tobago; (xii) legal drafting sessions on a WMD bill of law for the Dominican Republic; (xiii) an IMO-UNLIREC tabletop exercise on maritime and port security in the Dominican Republic; (xiv) three Proliferation Financing Legal Drafting Sessions in Trinidad and Tobago; (xv) an explosives and chemicals detection and handling course coordination meeting in Jamaica; (xvi) an IMO-UNLIREC Maritime and Port Security Risk Management Table Top Exercise in Belize (1540); (xvii) and IMO-UNLIREC tabletop exercise on maritime and port security Jamaica; and (xviii) the development of 1540 National Action Plan in Trinidad and Tobago. This assistance package is made possible with financial support from the United States and the Programme is prepared to continue throughout 2017.

Project description

The ongoing Programme to Strengthen the Implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1540(2004) has the objective of assisting Member States strengthen their legislative frameworks to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
