As part of the project ‘Building Capacities on Arms Control in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region’, the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) organized an executive education course in Amman, Jordan, on 12-16 November, 2017. The seminars were hosted by the Jordan Institute for Diplomacy in partnership with the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Arab Institute for Security Studies (ACSIS), with funding provided by the Government of Switzerland. The five-day course was attended by 23 government officials from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Switzerland. The course provided an opportunity for participants to hear speakers from Europe, the United States and the Middle East and discuss various aspects of conventional arms control, WMD non-proliferation, and disarmament with a regional focus. In particular, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles and the Iranian nuclear programme were discussed. The participants also attended the annual Amman Security Colloquium and Nuclear Forum, and visited the SESAME project on scientific cooperation among countries of the region.
