The Eleventh Asian Senior-level Talks on Non-Proliferation (ASTOP XI)
The Eleventh Asian Senior-level Talks on Non-Proliferation (ASTOP-XI) was held under the auspices of the Asian Senior-level Talks on Non-Proliferation (ASTOP) project. Participants exchanged views on topics such as regional nuclear issues, including the North Korean nuclear issue, maintaining and strengthening of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime, including ways to strengthen IAEA safeguards system and universalization of IAEA additional protocol, and the strengthening of nuclear security implementation. Participants also discussed the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1540, the strengthening of strategic trade control, the universalization of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), and shared the necessity of continuous efforts on counter-proliferation activities. ASTOP provides an important opportunity for all senior officials from Asian countries and those countries with a common interest in the security of Asian region to candidly exchange information and views on non-proliferation issues in a comprehensive manner.
The Asian Senior-level Talks on Non-Proliferation (ASTOP) is an annual conference organized by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) since 2003, bringing together senior level government officials from state in the Asia-Pacific Region to discuss contemporary issues in non-proliferation and disarmament.
