Activity description

The Arias Foundation led a regional tour with the purpose of improving arms control at the national level. The participating countries included the Chancelleries of El Salvador, Costa Rica and Guatemala, which took part in a discussion to exchange experiences as related to the implementation of arms controls at the national level. A representative from the Chancellery of Argentina, Mr. Esteban del Sar, was invited to each of the countries to impart his perspective to various groups of experts about the challenges of controlling arms and the importance of coordination between governmental agencies, as well as the unique challenges each country and the region as a whole face to reduce the arms trade and combat the sale of illegal arms. Likewise, Esteban del Sar referred to the roles of different actors in controlling the arms trade, drawing heavily from his experiences in Argentina on Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) implementation. The tour produced the kind of ‘horizontal exchange’ between the participants, who represented different institutions, including organizations from civil society, with particular emphasis on the challenges and national necessities of each country.
