CELAC holds Second Heads of State and Government Summit in Cuba

Activity description

The purpose of this second Heads of State and Government Summit, held in Havana, Cuba, was to advance in the unity and political, economic, social and cultural integration of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). In this meeting, the Special Declaration on Illicit Trafficking in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All its Aspects in Latin America and the Caribbean expressed its commitement to set up a Working Group to study the crime of illicit trade in small arms and light weapons and their ammunition and submit a proposal for a mechanism and procedures to coordinate efforts in an effective manner, on the basis of full respect for International Law and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, in order to strengthen actions aimed at preventing and combating illicit trade in small arms and light weapons and their ammunition for the sake of public safety. Following the summit, all 33 nations from CELAC adopted a landmark agreement making the region a “zone of peace”. The agreement highlights the Tlatelolco Treaty and the unity of the region.
