Activity description

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, has been supporting the Peace and Security Department of the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat between 2009-2014 in building a coherent regional peace and security architecture. The cooperation focuses on the establishment of regional mechanisms for conflict prevention, management and resolution. Until 2013, GIZ cooperated with the EAC Secretariat and the Partner States to control the proliferation of Small Arms-Light Weapons in the region. In Particular, the component of the project focusing on‘Small arms and light weapons control in East Africa’ was completed in December 2012. The following results have therefore been achieved as part of this project: 1) in cooperation with the RECSA, military and police weapons were marked and registered throughout the five partner countries; 2) the partner countries received direct support for controlling light weapons according to the guidelines of the 2002 Nairobi Protocol; 3) and, all of the national plans for light weapons control included gender mainstreaming components and were designed to promote participation by civil society.
